Open Access Publishing Options at KAUST: Home

Transforming scholarly communication and research publishing landscape.

KAUST Open Access Publishing Program

KAUST's University Library is happy to support research publishing at KAUST through offering many open access publishing agreements in 2021. These transformative agreements will allow KAUST’s corresponding authors to publish their accepted articles in open access mode (in the selected journals of publishers listed below) and thus made openly available at no cost to the author. The open-access publishing fee is covered via library subscriptions in "Read and Publish" deals.  [We are in discussion with few other publishers, these will be announced when finalized]

We also support the below publishers "subscribe to open" S2O program and KAUST authors can publish open access in their journals (selection of journals or complete portfolio) without any publishing cost. The open-access publishing fee is supported by library subscriptions in S2O deals.

We are a signatory of the OA2020 initiative and closely monitor the recent trends and discussions about changes in scholarly communication and research publishing ecosystems.

We acknowledge financial support from KAUST Office of Sponsored Research in supporting few open access deals.

Article Processing Charges (APC) Discounts

Thieme publishing offers KAUST authors a 50% discount on article processing charges (2021/23). During the submission process, authors should use KAUST email and will be notified about the discount.  KAUST authors who publish with Thieme need to make sure that a 50% discount is applied to their invoices.

Trans Tech Publications Ltd.(Scientific.Net) offers KAUST authors a 50% discount on article processing charges (2021/23). Interested authors need to complete the TTP OA Order Form and email it to subscriptions@scientific.net. KAUST authors who publish with Scientific.Net need to make sure that a 50% discount is applied to their invoices.

Frontiers publishing offers a 10% discount to corresponding authors affiliated with KAUST on APCs paid by them while publishing in any of Frontiers’ open access journals. KAUST authors who publish with Frontiers need to make sure that a 10% discount is applied to their invoices.

Authors are asked that during article submission the corresponding author’s KAUST institutional email address is used; this way the discount will be automatically applied. If another corresponding author email domain is used but KAUST is indicated as affiliation, Frontiers will verify eligibility for the discount with the KAUST Library.

MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) offers a 10% discount on APC paid for any research or review article where at least one KAUST author is an affiliated author. KAUST authors who publish with MDPI need to make sure that a 10% discount is applied to your invoices during 2021. Affiliated authors also receive a 10% discount on charges associated with open access book publishing with MDPI (i.e., book processing charges: BPCs).

NOTE: Only one discount through is permitted per paper, and the discount cannot be combined with other available discounts (e.g., discount vouchers, or society membership discounts).

A list of current APC charges is available at http://www.mdpi.com/about/apc

Open access through Research Repository

Important note: If a publisher is not listed here, you can still make your research article open access without paying an article processing charge to a publisher. You are required, as per KAUST’s open access policy, to submit the "author accepted manuscript" version of your article to KAUST’s research repository and University Library will make it available to the world according to the publisher's policies with a link to the original article and DOI. You can also deposit associated datasets to the research repository with a DOI registration. The Library has improved the Repository services with integrations to several systems, tools, search engines and now this has the highest download rate with a global user base.

The third new journal, Environmental Research: Ecology (ERE) will open for submissions later in 2021.  IOPP will waive all OA article publication charges for articles that are submitted to the three new launches before 2024. After the initial waiver period for all, authors from low- and middle-income countries who publish in IOPP’s new journals don’t have to pay any article processing costs.
