KAUST's University Library is happy to support research publishing at KAUST by offering many open access publishing agreements in 2023.
These transformative agreements will allow KAUST’s corresponding authors to publish their accepted articles in open access mode and thus be made openly available at no cost to the author or with a discount. The library subscription covers the publishing charges in "Read and Publish" deals. APC (article processing charges) discount deals provide an agreed discount on the APC, while KAUST authors pay the discounted APC.
In case when KAUST doesn't have an open access publishing deal with the publisher, KAUST authors are advised to submit an author accepted version of their paper to KAUST Research Repository.
Please click on appropriate link for more information on available deals.
We are a signatory of the OA2020 initiative and closely monitor the recent trends and discussions about changes in scholarly communication and research publishing ecosystems.
If you need further details, or a meeting, or presentation to your team - please email us at library@kaust.edu.sa or nevena.tomic@kaust.edu.sa
NOTE: University Library is not responsible for any payment of article processing charges (APC costs). It's the author's responsibility.
We also support the below publishers' "subscribe to open" S2O program and KAUST authors can publish open access in their journals (selection of journals or complete portfolio) without any publishing cost. The open access publishing fee is supported by library subscriptions in S2O deals (for more details click on the publisher's logo)
The MIT Press has announced the launch of Direct to Open (D2O). in March 2021. A first-of-its-kind sustainable framework for open-access monographs, D2O moves professional and scholarly books from a solely market-based, purchase model where individuals and libraries buy single e-books to collaborative, library-supported open-access model.
D2O gives institutions the opportunity to harness collective action to support access to knowledge. Beginning in 2022, all new MIT Press scholarly monographs and edited collections will be openly available on the MIT Press Direct e-book platform. Instead of purchasing a title once for a single collection, libraries now have the opportunity to fund them one time for the world through participant fees.
KAUST Library joined MIT D2O Initiative in 2023.

IOP Environmental Research series - 3 new OA journals with waived APCs
IOP Publishing (IOPP) is launching three new, fully open access (OA) journals, extending the publisher’s Environmental Research series.
Environmental Research: Health (ERH) and Environmental Research: Climate (ERCL) will both open submissions from today. The third new journal, Environmental Research: Ecology (ERE) will open for submissions later in 2021. IOPP will waive all OA article publication charges for articles that are submitted to the three new launches before 2024. After the initial waiver period for all, authors from low- and middle-income countries who publish in IOPP’s new journals don’t have to pay any article processing costs.
