Open Access Panel on Preprints was held
Faculty Open Access Panel on Preprints was held in the University Library on Tuesday, November 19, 2019. With the global Open Access initiatives to make scientific research accessible to all, preprints, are growing in use across different research disciplines. While the arXiv preprint server, of which the KAUST University Library this year became a supporting member, has long been a key part of communicating new research in physics and mathematics, the last few years have seen a number of other preprint servers, such as bioRxiv and ChemRxiv, emerge for researchers in other scientific disciplines.
Dr. Robert Hoehndorf (Assistant Professor of Computer Science), Dr. Kuo-Wei Huang, (Professor of Chemical Science) and Dr. Manuel Quezada de Luna (Research Scientist in Applied Mathematics) participated in the panel discussion, moderated by Dr. J. K. Vijayakumar (Library Director). They have discussed the experience in using preprints and how the use of preprints helped them to speed up research communication process and discussions around their latest research. It is understood from the discussions that, scholarly communication ecosystem is going through a transition phase and researchers see huge value in early sharing of research through preprints and other open science platforms.
